When a student joins a course in Construction and Building in Australia, the study the following core subjects:

  • Project Planning and Management
  • Estimating in Engineering Construction
  • Building Regulations

  • Engineering Design

At the completion of such courses students may obtain the following qualifications:

  • Certificate III
  • Certificate IV
  • Diploma
  • Bachelor
  • Master

The entry requirements vary according to the qualifications the student wishes to obtain. They are as follows:

  • To obtain Certificates or Diplomas, students must have finished Year 11
  • To obtain Bachelors, students must have completed Year 12 / Foundation Program / Diploma
  • To obtain Masters, students should hold an Australian Bachelors or equivalent in the relevant field of study. Some universities may require students to have prior work experience in applying for masters.

The English entry requirement across all three paths is the same, and as follows:

  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) score 42 with communicative skill score above 36; or
  • IELTS score 5.5 overall with all component scores about 5

Students may already have learned subjects and obtained qualifications from previous education or work experience and are eligible for credit transfer. This avoids wasteful repetition in the educational history of the student and helps to:

The duration of a course in Construction and Building is flexible. Based on the study period, different certificates are awarded to the student. Students are free to pause studies after obtaining a certificate for work or continue studying. The time spent on previous certification credits towards the next one.

  • 2 Years: Diploma
  • 3 – 4 Years: Bachelors
  • 5 – 6 Years: Masters

The average salaries are dependent on experience as follows:

  • Entry Level (0 – 5 Years) – $89,000
  • Mid Career (5 – 10 Years) – $107,000
  • Experienced (10 – 20 Years) – $129,000

Graduates of Construction and Building are eligible for Temporary Graduate Visa. This enables them to continue studying, working and staying temporarily. At course completion, based on specialization, they are allowed to stay for 2 years. Gaining relevant local work experience counters towards Permanent Residency applications.

Jobs are posted in Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List (CSOL) and Skilled Occupations List (SOL). Few examples of job postings are Project Builder, Bricklayer, Construction Project Manager, Surveyor, Welder (First Class).
